Vision for Education and Youth

I believe that every policy and strategic action should be driven by a simple question:

What is best for our children?

To lead productive and happy lives and be good citizens, our students must acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to reason for themselves, to navigate the digital world and to become lifelong learners. Our children deserve schools that nourish their curiosity and individual strengths.

I believe that vision must be aligned with the needs and desires of the entire school community and reflect a future orientation. To this end, the needs and talents of each student must be nurtured. I rely on research based educational trends and practices to guide visioning and action.

Transformative Leadership

Leadership involves motivating others to their finest efforts and aligning those efforts in a coherent direction. I believe in inspiring others-administrators, teachers and students-through example, enthusiasm and commitment. My experience has shown that results are achieved when teams collaborate to accomplish goals. Our school organization is high performing -- it is vision and goal driven, our faculty possess skills, knowledge and confidence to ensure that all children learn.

I have provided leadership beyond the school district to the region and state, as Trustee for the Vermont Superintendent Association. I also serve on committees of the Vermont Superintendent's Association, and regularly testify at legislative hearings in order to advocate for the needs of our students.

As Superintendent, I work effectively with school board members to ensure that the board policies are responsive to the goals of the school system.

Communication

As Superintendent, I maintain the focus of the organization on the important matters of schooling and student achievement.

Technology

Twenty-first century skills are crucial for our students' success in the future. Our school system leads the region in technology implementation including recent 1-1 device and other hardware acquisition, wireless access, technology integration in the classroom and full broad band operations in all schools. I model, encourage and expect administrators, faculty and staff to engage students and prepare them for a technological society.

Policy Development and Goal Orientation

I have guided our school boards in the development of policies which focus on outcomes. This effort has been effective in guiding the growth of the school organization and ultimately, the improvement of education in the school district.

Curriculum, Assessment, Instruction and Accountability

The purpose of schooling is to ensure continuous improvement of all students. A school that is characterized by systematically implemented research-based practices and a system of continuous progress monitoring will excel. Continuous curriculum improvement process engages teachers, learning specialists and administrators in the study, development and implementation of curriculum, assessment and instructional programs where data based decision-making are expected. Professional development, supervision and evaluation are essential to the growth of faculty and administrators and ultimately, student achievement.

Finance and Human Resource Management

Community resources must be managed in a fiscally responsible manner, carefully aligning school district resources with the strategic plan. Managing our budget in a time of waning resources presents challenges; however, due to the collaborative efforts of administrators and school board members, we use use a zero-based budgeting process. As Superintendent, I strive to create a culture of high expectations as well as positive labor relations. We have achieved voluntary settlements.
